| www.securedbydesign.com | | In the late 1980’s, house burglaries were rising year on year. It was, found that in many cases, entry to homes had been through poorly secured doors or windows, and that in a lot of cases, the design of the estates, how homes were positioned and where access to rear gardens was set offered big opportunities for criminals to operate virtually un-noticed |
In response to this, as well as improving ways of policing and catching criminals, the Association of Chief Police Officers – ACPO – set up a scheme called ‘Secured By Design’ (SBD), trained selected Police Officers in crime design techniques, and started to work with architects and developers to make sure that new developments were designed in such a way as to offer as little opportunity for criminals as possible. By using approved products such as doors, windows and locks, the security of homes was increased even further.
Following the success of the scheme, in 1999, ACPO set up ACPO Crime Prevention Initiatives Ltd (ACPO CPI Ltd) to administer the SBD scheme as well as other crime prevention programmes.
SBD now has over 200 companies registered who manufacture and supply a wide range of products approved to SBD standards, which are set by a technical committee, and have produced a series of specifications and guidelines for architects and developers, as well as literature for home owners who want to improve their home security.
